Garfield County Conservation District hosted its annual speech contest Oct.14.
Three Garber FFA members participated in the speech contest themed “Dig It! The Secrets of Soil.” Candace Ong, Samantha Nickel and Jarred Strate all presented 3-5 minute speeches, competing for the chance to go on to the area contest. Strate, an eighth-grader, won the junior division, receiving a $75 savings bond. Ong, a sophomore, won second place, receiving a $50 savings bond. Both Strate and Ong earned the chance to compete in the area contest, which was Oct. 29 in Taloga. Strate placed first and Ong placed second and earned a trip to the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts state contest to be in Oklahoma City in February. Both students will present their speeches at Garfield County Conservation District’s annual meeting, which will be Thursday in Enid.
An essay contest and a poster contest also were sponsored by the conservation district. Results were:
Eighth grade essay: Jarred Strate won the eighth-grade essay contest and also won the area contest. His essay will be submitted to the state contest.
Poster contest results were:
• First grade — Kynlee Skaggs, Monroe Elementary School.
• Second grade — Laney Wardrop, Waukomis Elementary School.
• Third grade — Hannah Barton, Waukomis Elementary. She also placed second in the area contest.
• Fourth grade — Sabrielle Pace, Waukomis Elementary. She also placed first in the area contest and her poster will be submitted to the state contest.
• Sixth grade — Dillon Nickel, Garber Junior High School.
• 10th grade — Samantha Nickel, Garber High School. She also placed first in the area and her poster will be submitted to the state contest.
