Garber’s Strate national finalist

A local FFA member, already immersed in a hands-on experience aimed to jumpstart careers in agriculture, can add one more impressive achievement: national finalist.

Jarred Strate, of Garber FFA, was one of four national finalists for the beef production-placement proficiency award at the 85th National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis.

National FFA Organization’s agriculture proficiency awards program recognizes student achievement in agribusiness gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. The program serves as the award structure for an FFA member’s supervised agricultural experience that is designed to develop specialized skills in 49 categories.

Strate became eligible for the national contest after winning the Oklahoma state FFA competition. He will take home a $500 award plus a plaque. Strate was born into a cattle family and works for the family company.

In addition to the national honor, Strate was selected as a 2013 Educational Travel Seminar winner. He will go to Costa Rica in June 2013 to learn about internationla agriculture.

His parents are Janet and Jim Strate. His FFA adviser is Dexter Matlock.
