Alva FFA members attend convention

ALVA, Okla. — Grow together. Grow as FFA. Grow as a person. Grow through agriculture.

“Grow” was the theme of the 2012 National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis. This theme can be perceived so many ways: from growing up and getting older; from the time you enter the FFA in the eighth grade until the time you graduate; to growing crops on the farm and watching them bloom and mature. Growing through agriculture is what FFA is truly all about.

Alva FFA members Tanner Burton, Tyler Burton, Courtney Mapes, Traci Owen, Lora Riley and Emily Shafer, accompanied by adviser Jessica Chegwidden and Tina Shafer, attended the 85th annual National FFA Convention.

At the opening session, members were inspired by motivational speaker and retired Olympic skater Scott Hamilton, who spoke of his many trials and tribulations through cancer to get to where he is today. He said during his speech “the only true disability is a bad attitude.”

The next day members listened to Walter Bond, retired NBA player, and Cain Thurman, national FFA officer. Bond is ranked in the top five motivational speakers in the world, and this showed as he spoke some inspirational words to FFA members. Thurman also seemed to be a seasoned professional at public speaking, as he spoke of finding your true home in life and doing what you love. Throughout the day, members also supported Oklahoma FFA members as they were presented with proficiency, livestock judging and speaking awards.
